For over twenty years, during what I call my desert experience,

I seemed smart enough only to go from the mess I was in, into one just like it.

I had no idea why I was walking the planet. I had no idea what I should do for a living. I knew I had natural abilities; had a sense of what I was good at but no clue of what to do and even less of a clue how to figure it out.

Then, in the midst of a transition, feeling completely lost and without hope, stomping around my living room, I began yelling at God. I could no longer contain my frustration.

How did it make sense that I could have natural abilities with no way to use them? I could not imagine that the universe intended for me to go bashing through life, in one dead end job after another, making no impact, making no difference in anything or for anyone. I was at my wits’ end.

In that moment, I was reminded of an event from earlier in my life; a career and vocational program I had gone through in high school. My parents, concerned I was underperforming in school, sent me to a vocational program to undergo a battery of tests to determine my interests, strengths, aptitudes, and capabilities.

The program director, a psychologist, while reviewing my report with me concluded by saying that the career best suited to me was teaching. She went on to say, there wasn’t even a close second. “Complete high school then go immediately to Teachers’ College and complete the program,” she said.

It seemed that the universe had not only arranged to get me my answer but arranged for it to be regifted to me at a point in my life when I might be ready to accept it. When I was first given the answer, I scoffed at it and took it as an insult.

Twenty years later and completely frustrated; I was more willing.

This is the experience that gave birth to my book and formed the root of my coaching career.
